Chapter 20
Never Wanted
What is this?â Tink asked, staring at the crates of food sitting on the shore.
Peter shook his head slowly. He hadnât the faintest idea. Last night, the southern beach had been absolutely clear. This morning, heâd awakened and gone out to survey the island only to find this pile of food sitting out on the shore.
But that didnât mean he was about to let it go to waste. No, heâd prayed far too much lately for a miracle to leave the food here. He bent down and hefted a crate of oranges onto his shoulder. âThere,â he pointed, âgrab that bag of bread.â
Tink frowned but did as he said. âSo weâre just going to take it then?â
âWhy not?â Peter grabbed a bucket of dried meat sticks as well, then tried to lift off the ground.
Only to come right back down. Drat.
âThe food makes us too heavy to fly. Weâll have to carry it all on foot.â Peter paused to gather a few more drawstring bread bags and tie them across his chest, along with his bucket of meat sticks and crate of oranges. When he finally felt decently balanced, he started slowly back up the path.
âYouâre making me walk back up the mountain?â
âNo oneâs making you do anything.â
Tink snapped her mouth shut, grabbed two of the bread bags, and followed, though the pout of her lip made Peter roll his eyes. The stardust was continuing to weaken. She should just be grateful to have food, whether she had to carry it or not.
Several minutes passed before Tink broke the silence. âThink it floated in?â She sounded slightly breathless. âLike on a raft or something?â
Peter paused to readjust the weight of the orange crate on his shoulder and continued his walk up the trail. The more they talked, the longer their trek would take.
âPeter, wait!â
âYou know the way,â he called without looking back.
âBut Peterâ¦â
There was the sound of a package hitting the ground, then Tinkerbell flitted in front of him, directly in his path.
âBefore you say anything,â she said, holding her hands up in front of her, âI know youâre angry with me. Furious.â
Peter gave her a dark glare. âWhatever gave you that impression?â
âBut you have to hear why.â
Peter wanted nothing more than to push past the little fae and continue on his way. But his arms were getting tired, and the youthful, hopeful look in her eyes threatened to melt one of the many icicles that had grown in his heart around the place she had once occupied. âWhat is it?â he asked, putting the fruit down on the ground. âMake it quick.â
âYou didnât want me to tell Tiger Lily about Wendyâs kiss.â Tink looked down at the ground.
âHow long did it take you to figure that out?â
âIâll admit, I was glad to be rid of her.â Tink rubbed her elbow. âBut I wasnât doing it to make you unhappy. I promise!â
âThen why did you do it, Tink?â
She shoved a tendril of platinum hair out of her eyes. âTwo reasons.
